Aging Out of Foster Care

Turning 18 is exciting! You get to be a legal adult, make your own decisions, and make more decisions for yourself. There are a lot of laws that start to play a bigger role in your life, and to help you understand those, The Florida Bar put together a Legal Survival Guide. It discusses driving laws, internet laws, and other relevant topics.

In addition to all the expected changes that come at 18, you're special. You're aging out of foster care, and because of that you have some extra considerations. Below are a few resources to help you navigate your new freedom and opportunities.

What does it mean to "age out" of foster care?
At 18, youth can decide that they want additional support transitioning to adulthood by electing to extend foster care through their 21st birthday (or 22nd with a documented disability).

This site will provide information about:
  • re-entering foster care,
  • finding housing, and
  • college rights.
